WHOOP: subscription-first recovery tracking, no screen attached
WHOOP is a coaching subscription that happens to ship hardware — which is exactly right for some athletes and exactly wrong for gadget buyers.
Researched take — the recovery-obsessive's pick, compared against my daily-driver Oura.
Affiliate disclosure: buying through these links supports the shop at no extra cost to you.

Why it earns the spot
- Deep strain/recovery/sleep coaching loop that athletes swear by
- No screen: zero notifications, zero distraction, gym-proof
- Wearable 24/7 including workouts where rings get dented
- Hardware improves without you re-buying it
Watch out
- The membership IS the price — stop comparing it to one-time-purchase bands
- No screen means no glanceable anything; the app is the product
- Overkill if you just want general wellness signals
The model, explained straight
You subscribe; the band comes with it. That inverts every other product in this store, and it's why WHOOP comparisons go wrong. Compare it against a personal-training habit, not against a watch.
The loop is: it measures strain and recovery, then tells you how hard to push today. People who follow that loop get real value. People who wanted a fitness tracker with a screen churn out in three months.
WHOOP or a ring?
Lifting, contact sports, serious training blocks: the band takes abuse a ring can't, and the coaching is more aggressive. General health, sleep focus, and wearing something invisible: that's ring territory (see the Oura Ring 4 take).
Buy WHOOP if you'll act on daily strain coaching and accept subscription pricing. If you mostly want sleep and wellness data, a ring is the calmer answer.
